“The sweetness of the Scriptures” and the light of the eyes: the Syriac Fathers as biblical interpreters
The reading of Scripture for the spiritual purpose of sharing Christ through his word is the essence of patristic exegesis and the goal of orthodox biblical hermeneutics. It is the main aim of the present volume to portray the multifaceted aspects of the presence and interpretation of Holy Scripture in the theology and spirituality of Syriac Christianity of the first millennium. The authors of the studies brought together here, specialists in Syriac studies and biblical studies, have been invited to respond to it from different points of view. The diverse and yet unified content of the volume invites the reader to three main levels of reading:
– historical and patristic, for familiarization with syriac authors little or not at all known in the Romanian space.
– theological, to decipher the interweaving of syriac theology with Scripture and its interpretation in the specific context of the Eastern Church.
– exegetical and hermeneutical: biblical scholars will be delighted to find answers and original solutions to the still acute and apparently thorny problems of Orthodox biblical hermeneutics, such as: the attitude towards modern exegetical methods, the relationship between academic and spiritual exegesis, the place of Scripture in theology and life, etc.
