The Book of Chastity provides information on many saints and spiritual authors such as Isaac the Syrian, Joseph Hazzaya, and John of Dalyatha… These 140 short biographical notes introduce the reader to the Christian monastic world of the East, concisely presenting the emergence of monastic centers that had a major impact on the region.

The present volume brings together studies on patristic biblical exegesis as well as new testament exegesis based on principles drawn from patristic writings. The exegesis of saints such as Ignatius Theophorus, Dionysius the Areopagite, Gregory of Nyssa, Isaac the Syrian and Nikodemus of the Holy Mountain is rigorously analyzed, the results being synthesized in a corpus of biblical hermeneutical principles that presuppose and integrate all aspects of ecclesial life: dogmatic, philocalic, liturgical, pastoral, catechetical.

The complete Ascetical Homilies of St. Isaac the Syrian is now accessible to the Romanian reader thanks to the translation of this volume, which includes Homilies 31-68, continuing and concluding the series of Homilies 1-30 of the first volume.
Along with the homilies translated from the Greek version, the 13 homilies preserved only in the Syriac manuscript tradition are also translated in Romanian. Also in this volume, the Romanian text is placed in parallel with the ancient Greek version or, as the case may be, with the Syriac text, for the homilies preserved only in the original.
The reading of Scripture for the spiritual purpose of sharing Christ through His word is the essence of patristic exegesis and the goal of orthodox biblical hermeneutics. It is the main aim of the present volume to portray the multifaceted aspects of the presence and interpretation of Holy Scripture in the theology and spirituality of Syriac Christianity of the first millennium. The authors of the studies brought together here, specialists in Syriac studies and biblical studies, have been invited to respond to this aim from different points of view.
